Earth with Solar Panels

Our Mission

At Directed Space, we believe solar energy shouldn't be limited by Earth's rotation. We founded the company on the belief that well-directed energy can be used by all other technologies to improve the human condition. Solar energy is growing at an enormous rate. Soon, it will be the most common source of energy in the world. It is also rapidly becoming the cheapest. [1] However, there is an obvious problem with solar energy being used as a primary power source for AI or any other power intensive endeavor. During the evening or at night, PVs generate no energy at all.

This is effectively what has happened to the regional power networks of Texas and California, with devastating consequences for solar investment and viability. In these areas a phenomenon called the duck curve takes place, where solar provides too much power during the day (causing REPs or the utility to lose money buying power they don't use). [2] Then, during the evening, fossil fuel providers have to spin up massive turbines on demand to provide the power people need when solar is no longer in use:

All of this turning on/off of energy is expensive and unsustainable for everybody. We believe that we can create a future where solar energy is the only method needed to power the entire world. All we need to do is defeat Earth's geometry by redirecting the necessary sunlight from 650 km up.

There's a lot of people out there who think this is a crazy plan. They've done the math, they say, and it doesn't add up. [3] And five years ago, they were right. Until the advent of the Falcon Heavy, launching satellites was too expensive to justify the unit economics of each satellite over a reasonable 20-year lifespan. However, with the advent of Falcon Heavy and Starship, comes a ~90% reduction in launch costs. That means that not only can we make energy from these mirrors profitably, we can deliver energy with rates at or better than the real-time market price. At Directed Space, we have a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to take advantage of ripe economic conditions for this new method of energy generation. By the time we build out our constellation, we aim to produce enough energy so that every solar farm can double its daily energy output.

This is your chance to power the future. We're building orbital infrastructure to power everything by augmenting solar farms from space. Join our mission.
